Corporately Challenged

This project features an amazing cast of talented actors who deliver hilarious dialogue and help to create a show that keeps the viewer engaged. So, how do you find and keep a great cast?

Phipper Films was essential in providing casting services. From watching reels and holding auditions to partnering with SAG/AFTRA to ensure the team in front of the camera was equipped to give award-winning performances. But there are other things that are crucial in keeping a cast on their marks when it comes to filmmaking. Here are a few things to consider when auditioning and hiring your cast.

Attitude is EVERYTHING!

An actor may be able to remember that amazing monologue ripping to shreds their nemesis, but be sure that when the camera stops rolling, the insults stop as well. Dealing with a disrespectful or unkind actor can affect everyone on set, and it's easiest to eliminate this problem before it begins. The best place to do this is in the audition. One way to find troublemakers is to have a representative in the waiting room who can keep an eye out for bad behaviors.

Back to One

If an actor has caught your eye, be sure to give them direction, even if they nailed the performance. An actor should be able to easily pivot when given new direction. Remember, your director will need a cast who can quickly make changes if they are going to be able to stay on time. If the actor takes the direction, and does it without rolling their eyes or arguing, you may have found your star.

Give Positive Notes

It doesn't matter who you are, approval is at the core of the human experience, and actors are no exception. When giving feedback always, and we mean always, give some sort of praise...even if they aren’t quite a fit for the part. The life of an actor is full of rejection. Giving positive feedback sends a signal that they’re doing their job well.

Additionally, the audition is not one-sided. Treating actors with respect and acknowledging their talent demonstrates that you are a professional, and this is a project worth pursuing.

Keep Rolling

Once a project is cast, it's time to move on to other tasks. Be sure your crew is respectful, professional, and wants to be on the project. Just as one bad actor can spoil the vibe, an unruly crew can influence your stars. Be sure that anyone working with your cast understands that they are expected to be kind, professional, positive, and knowledgeable about the cast. This will prevent misunderstandings and drama off-camera.
