Building America

Building America tells the timeless story of a midwestern father-son surveying team in search of new gear. Phipper Films was key in finding crew for the Olathe, Kansas shoot, a town very far from Hollywood. It may seem impossible to crew up in a non-film community, but thinking ahead makes it possible. Here are some helpful ideas for finding the right resources regardless of your location.

Community Connections

Even small towns often have a film community, and it’s important to get plugged into that community as early as possible. Checking the socials to find connections will not only help you build your team but also gain support as you look for locations, sponsorships and background actors.

Film Festivals

One of the best places to look for crew in a smaller town is at festivals screening films created by local talent and that the locals deem worthy of awards. Planning a location scout around a festival can stretch your precious funds while accomplishing multiple tasks in one trip. Attending screenings with film fans can be a great place to find assistants who know the area and can help you navigate the best resources for your production.

Local Businesses

When considering everything needed for your production, look for local designers, vanity services like hair, makeup and costuming, and craft services from businesses close to the production. Keeping as many of these experts local will lower your housing and travel expenses. If the city or state offers tax credits, your payments to these locals may mean a rebate for your production.

Phipper Films Services
